FAQOfficial translation in Slovakia: frequently asked questions
Short answers about price, turnaround, ordering, originals and apostilles. If your question is not here, send me your document or question on WhatsApp and I reply within 24 hours.
What is an official translation and how is it different from an ordinary one?
An official (sworn) translation is made by a translator registered with the Slovak Ministry of Justice. It is printed, permanently bound to the document with a tricolour cord, and carries the translator’s round seal and signature. An ordinary translation has no seal and is enough for your own use or for a doctor or company. Read more: Official or ordinary translation?
How much does an official translation cost?
From €20 per standard page (1,800 characters including spaces). I send the exact price and deadline within 24 hours of seeing a photo of your document, with no obligation. Any surcharge for specialised text or an urgent deadline is agreed in advance. See how the price is calculated and the prices page.
How quickly will my translation be ready?
Short certificates, for example a birth certificate, are usually ready within 1–2 working days. I give the exact date together with the price. If you need it sooner, tell me right away; any urgent surcharge is agreed before I start.
How do I order an official translation?
Send a photo or scan of your document on WhatsApp to +421 905 991 807, or use the contact form on this site. You receive the price and deadline within 24 hours. After you agree, you bring or post the original or a notarised copy.
Do I have to hand in the original document?
An official translation is permanently bound to the document. If you only have one copy (birth certificate, diploma, driving licence), I recommend translating a notarised copy so you keep your original. See how to prepare in 6 steps.
Can I get an official translation by email?
An official translation is always printed and bound to the document, so it is collected in person or sent by post. On request I can also email you a scan of the finished translation, but the scan does not replace the stamped printed version.
Do I need an apostille or other legalisation?
It depends on the office you are submitting to. If an apostille is required, obtain it before the translation, so I translate the document together with the apostille and the translation is complete. Ask the office for its list of documents by email. More in the preparation guide.
Do you translate from languages other than English?
My main language pair is English and Slovak in both directions. Official translations into or from other languages, such as German, Spanish, Ukrainian, French, Turkish, Serbian, Russian or Hungarian, are arranged on request. I confirm the price and deadline after I see your document.
Do you work in Bratislava and the surrounding area?
I am based in Trnava (Jazdecká 8686/65, by appointment) but work for clients all over Slovakia. From Bratislava and the surrounding area you send a photo of the document, post the original or notarised copy, and I send the finished translation back by registered mail.
Are you registered with the Slovak Ministry of Justice?
Yes. I am registered in the list of experts, interpreters and translators kept by the Ministry of Justice of the Slovak Republic: as a translator under number 970779 (since 15 May 2006) and as an interpreter for English under number 950972. You can verify my entries directly in the register: translators register entry and interpreters register entry. See about me and wedding interpreting.
