Guide · Official vs ordinary translationOfficial or ordinary translation in Slovakia? When you need the stamp
Slovak offices, courts and registry offices usually require an official (sworn) translation with the round seal. For a doctor, a company or your own use, an ordinary translation is often enough, and it can be delivered by email. If you are not sure, ask the institution you will hand the translation to. That is the safest way to know.
What an official translation is
An official translation is made by a translator registered with the Slovak Ministry of Justice. You can recognise it because it:
- is printed and permanently bound to the document (the original or a notarised copy) with a tricolour cord,
- carries the translator’s round seal and signature,
- ends with a translator’s certificate that includes the entry number in the translator’s register.
So an official translation is not a PDF in an email. I can email you a scan on request, but the official version is always the printed one.
When you usually need an official translation
- documents for Slovak offices, courts, notaries and registry offices,
- birth and marriage certificates, criminal record certificates, diplomas, driving licences,
- documents for the foreign police, child benefit or a driving licence exchange,
- Slovak documents for authorities, schools or employers abroad, if they ask for it.
When an ordinary translation is enough
- a medical report for a doctor (unless the insurer or an office asks for an official one),
- company documents, contracts for internal use, correspondence,
- website texts, CVs and cover letters.
