Registry office (matrika)Getting married in Slovakia: documents for the registry office
If one partner is a foreigner, the registry office asks for documents with an official translation into Slovak. I translate them from English into Slovak and from Slovak into English, with the official seal.
Documents the registry office usually asks for
- birth certificate
- proof of marital status (for example a Certificate of No Impediment)
- divorce decree or death certificate of a former spouse, if relevant
- proof of a change of name
The registry office where you marry gives you the exact list and tells you whether the documents need an apostille or superlegalisation. Get these before the translation.
Interpreter at the wedding
If the bride, groom or a witness does not speak Slovak, the registry office asks for an official interpreter. As a sworn interpreter for English I can do this too.
The marriage certificate is also needed later, for example for child benefit.
How it works
- Send a photo of your document on WhatsApp or by email. I reply with the exact price and the date it will be ready.
- Bring the original or a notarised copy to my office in Trnava, or send it by post.
- Collect your official translation. It is bound to the document with the Slovak tricolour ribbon, signed and sealed.
