Guide · Wedding interpretingInterpreting at a wedding in Slovakia: what to do when you need a sworn interpreter
If one of the couple is a foreign national, the wedding ceremony is usually interpreted by a sworn interpreter with an official seal. This is how my clients found one and prepared for the day.
Why a sworn interpreter
At a wedding with a foreigner, the ceremony is most often interpreted by an interpreter with an official seal, who is authorised to carry out official interpreting. I love this type of interpreting for its positive meaning. I am glad to help young people at the beginning of their life together, so I give the translation and delivery of the speech special attention.
How my clients found a sworn interpreter for their wedding
- Depending on the language and region, search for a sworn interpreter in the register of the Ministry of Justice.
- Call the interpreter and check availability for your date. I recommend at least 1–2 months ahead, because weddings are usually held on days off.
- Explain the situation and exchange emails.
- Agree on a price that includes: preparation of the translation of the speech, interpreting time (rounded up to whole hours), travel time and travel costs.
- Appoint one person who will communicate with the interpreter. There is a great deal to arrange before a wedding.
- Send the interpreter the text of the speech at least a week in advance. A week is my deadline, it may differ between interpreters.
- After the ceremony, the interpreter signs the marriage record, stamps it with the official seal and provides the documents for payment.
- The person who communicated with the interpreter should meet them before the wedding, so the interpreter knows where to go, and pays them after the ceremony.
Documents for the registry office
For a wedding with a foreigner the registry office usually also asks for officially translated documents, for example a birth certificate or a marriage-eligibility certificate. See marriage in Slovakia: document translation, and how to prepare in 6 steps.
